No Hackney High-rise

No Hackney High-rise was formed by a group of Hackney residents who oppose the proposed development at 22-44 London Lane.

Whilst leafleting the broader area, we became aware of the strength of feeling across the borough regarding the development of new towers. The general view is that:

  • Tower blocks are out of place in residential streets that are typically low-rise (2, 3 and 4 storey).
  • Tower blocks are inappropriate for families and do nothing to answer Hackney’s current housing problem (where the greatest need is for 3 and 4 bed accommodation).
  • In a borough that holds the record for the most tower block demolitions in Europe, people don’t want to see towers blocking the sky-scape that they have only recently regained.
  • Local amenities and services in Hackney are already at breaking point: high-density developments will only exacerbate these problems.
  • People do not support the Tall Buildings Strategy (2005) which proposes that parts of London Fields East and West side are potential locations for tower blocks to be built overlooking the park.
  • The Tall Buildings Strategy identified potential ‘areas of opportunity for tall buildings’, but the proposed development at 22-44 London Lane falls OUTSIDE these areas. There is therefore no support within the strategy for a tall building on this site.

However, the strategy does indicate the potential for tall buildings in other locations around London Fields and Mare Street and residents should object to this.

Over 100 residents from across the borough have signed up in the past month to oppose this scheme. Please join No Hackney High-rise now! We need thousands more supporters to make our voice heard and win this campaign!
